The Historic Plaza

The story of Granada Senior Living starts in 1926 on the bank of the river with the construction of a 12-story hotel, The Plaza.

The Plaza was designed by local architects Atlee B. Ayres and Robert M. Ayers, and cost $2.5 million in total to construct.

The doors to the building were officially opened for the first time in 1927 with 250 guest rooms and the original East wing that contained the lobby.. In 1928, the “Greater Plaza” area opened up 250 more rooms and the remaining wings that contained restaurants, gardens, and more.

Throughout The Years

The original setting and style of The Plaza hotel was inspired by Spanish Renaissance and evoked old San Antonio styles through colored tiles, mirrors, French doors, and iron balconies.  The Plaza was sold in 1956 to Hilton Hotel Properties where it was eventually renamed the Granada, and received a new Spanish look. In 1966, the San Antonio Building and Construction Trades Council bought the property and converted it into affordable apartments for San Antonio’s senior citizens.

Granada Today

Today, Granada Homes reopened as the same affordable apartments for seniors 62 and up, but with a restored and revived look. It is a community where residents can come together, live comfortably, enjoy themselves, all while taking advantage of the benefits that come with downtown living.
